Ultimate list of halal Basque Burnt Cheesecakes in Singapore

Ultimate halal BBC

The recent Circuit Breaker saw a massive emergence of home bakers overnight, and together with them, the inimitable basque burnt cheesecake (or BBC for short).

This isn’t all too surprising as unlike the traditional New York cheesecake, the BBC is relatively easy to make. It is so easy, it has its origins from failed baking experiments.

Many bakers have since come up with unique versions of the BBC, but they all retain these features: a burnt crisp top, a custardy, wobbly cheesecake underneath, and a gooey lava centre.

Here, we rounded up halal places – from eateries to home-based businesses – that deliver this popular cake right to your doorstep.

If you know of other places that should be included in this list, let us know in the comments below.

Paparch

Arguably the most popular BBC brand in Singapore, Paparch is so sought after that slots for August are already full.

They open up more slots time to time, however you will need to camp on your computer to place your orders as soon as they announce it on their social media platforms.

Paparch’s burnt cheesecakes used to come in only the original flavour. The seven-inch cheesecake ($49) is good for seven people.

However, they recently introduced a new matcha version which is even more limited.

Paparch’s popularity is testament to the quality of its product. Reviews are consistently good, with most customers paying compliments to its luscious melted ooze, and a perfectly burnt crust.

BasqueKeks

This home baker prides herself in baking ugly, messy, rustic cheesecakes which are all winning traits of BBC anyway.

They have also gone the way of monster milk shakes (remember that trend?) by adding various toppings to their cakes including homemade Biscoff spread, Kinder Bueno, and warm blueberry compote with Driscoll’s strawberries.

Pre-order dates for August are not released yet, but we suspect they might be snapped up early if you’re too late.

Cat & the Fiddle

Photograph: @catandthefiddlecakes/ Instagram

Cat & the Fiddle is known for its extensive selection of cheesecakes, so naturally we expected them to also offer burnt cheesecake. And offer it they do.

Called ‘Charred Eclipse’ ($48.90 for seven-inch, serves 10), the cheesecake specialist’s version of the BBC takes inspiration from the solar eclipse. We definitely see the similarity; a charred exterior hiding a smooth, lavish body of cheese inside.

The website mentioned that the cake uses both cream cheese and Martabak cheese, which we think could just be mozzarella cheese. If that’s true, we imagine this one to be a nice blend of sweet and savoury flavours.

The Whisk Lady

Photograph: @thewhisklady/ Instagram

The Whisk Lady’s version is petite, but still checks all the boxes of a killer dessert. There’s a beautifully toasted top, a molten centre, and a variety of toppings to boot.

The ever expanding menu features the cheesecake in original ($22 for five-inch), Nutella and Speculoos ($27 for five-inch).

Her latest Instagram post introduced a new flavour: Milo! And we’re already salivating. The BBC is topped with condensed milk, powdered Milo and Milo nuggets. Milo dinosaur, what?

Butter Studio

If you are looking for the classic basque burnt cheesecake, you won’t find it here. Instead, Butter Studio offers two unique versions: Marble Burnt Cheesecake ($45 for six-inch) and Rose Burnt Cheesecake ($48 for six-inch).

The former features decadent chocolate swirls while the latter is infused with fragrant organic French rose, and topped with dried rose petals. It also reveals an elegant pink hue when cut.

Fluff Bakery

Fun fact: Fluff Bakery has been selling the basque cheesecake since 2019, way before it became the cake of the pandemic. It was so popular that they put it into their permanent signature cakes menu.

At $75, the cake is on the heftier side price-wise. But it’s also larger than most, and a whole cake serves 10.

Bakes By The Neighbour

Photograph: @bakesbytheneighbour/ Instagram

Do not skip and discount this neighbourly baker from the BBC league just yet because they have a rather unique cheesecake flavour in their menu: durian!

Durian lovers rejoice. Trust a local baker to put durian into anything. As weird as it sounds, we think the combination could work with the bittersweet notes of durian cutting through the tartness of cheesecakes.

The bakery claims that they use Musang King variety of durian, or more popularly known as Mao Shan Wang. The cake sells for $65 each, delivery included.

If you’re not a fan of durian, how does Matcha Burnt Cheesecake ($55) with adzuki beans sound? Yup, that’s a pairing we could get behind no matter what.

Sinfulcakes

Photograph: @sinfulcakes/ Instagram

This home-based business turned brick-and-mortar bakery may have risen to fame thanks to its popular macarons, but its basque burnt cheesecakes are equally popular. So much so that all the bakes get sold out within minutes of being available on their Shopee store.

Sinfulcakes’ goodies are so hard to get a hold of, but if their macarons are anything to go by, we imagine their cheesecakes to be equally delicious, if not better.

On the off chance that you are able to add these cakes to cart, here are what they would cost you: Burnt Basque Cheesecake ($55), Thai Milk Tea Basque Cheesecake ($55, Lotus Biscoff Basque Cheesecake ($60), Nutella Basque Cheesecake ($60), Cookies & Cream Burnt Cheesecake ($60).

Burnt Co. Bakery

Photograph: @burntco.bakery/ Instagram

Since its launch in May this year, Burnt Co. Bakery has been churning out two versions of burnt cheesecakes: the Classic ($36 for six-inch, $48 for eight-inch) and the Lotus Speculoos ($39 for six-inch, $52 for eight-inch).

There’s no denying that their cakes are wonderful pieces of art. However, from the IG reviews we’ve seen, we noticed that their cakes are sturdier than most and do not come with the ‘grammable gooey centre we’ve come to expect of BBC.

If you like your cheesecakes on the more baked side, then this should be right up your alley.

Brulee

A burnt cheesecake looks good in all its crackly glory, but over at Brulee, it takes things up a notch with special renditions of the trendy dessert.

The chempedak ($50 for six-inch) for instance, is filled with jackfruit bits while the chocolate version ($50 for six-inch) is made with a Valrhona chocolate fudge and looks gorgeously rustic.

If you’re already acquainted with burnt cheesecakes, Brulee will make you fall in love with the sweet treat all over again with latest flavour Mao Shan Wang (launching August).

Another baker to join the MSW BBC craze is Fasque. Its latest offering ($40 for five-inch) features a pure durian core waiting to be discovered beneath its cheesy shell.

Other flavours include the Classic (from $32 for five-inch) and Lotus Speculoos (from $35 for five-inch).

Despite only publishing 17 posts on its Instagram since April, Fasque has amassed over 4,000 followers. If you too would like to #basqueinthegoodvibes, a BBC order from Fasque is highly recommended.

Uli

The Basque burnt cheesecake from Uli is one of their latest additions to their menu. Currently, they are only selling the original flavour ($36 for six-inch) and we are happy to say that it is light, airy, and has that quintessential oozing factor.

The home-based business has other delectable treats on the menu such as Nutella Tapak Kuda ($10), mini fruit tarts ($20 per box of 30 pieces) and our personal favourite, the Popiah Basah ($6 per box of two pieces).

Coconad

Photograph: @coconadsg/ Instagram

What’s a food trend if it isn’t as pretty as a rainbow? Coconad has carved out a slice of the cake so to speak with its own unique take on the BBC: a rainbow one!

The Rainbow Burnt Cheesecake ($52 for seven-inch) is reminiscent of a Paddle Pop ice-cream with its pastel hues of blue, pink, purple and green.

This whimsical twist on the classic burnt cheesecake also comes with toppings such as rainbow rice or marshmallow. With a cake as pretty as this one, it will definitely charm both children and the young at heart.

Simplynuha

Photograph: @simplynuha/ Instagram

Simplynuha is one of the more prominent home-based businesses, having been in the game since 2013. The family of bakers has churned out a wide variety of bakes in the past including cakes, cookies, brownies and more.

The basque burnt cheesecake has been in their menu for a while, even before the pandemic struck. As the popularity of the cake rose in the past few months, the cake has become more prominent in Simplynuha’s Instagram feed.

Customers who have had the cake had only positive reviews to share, with the praises “the best” commonly accoladed to the baker.

The original Basque Burnt Cheesecake goes for $57, and is made of Liberty Lane Cream Cheese. Other flavours include Varlhona chocolate, Dalgona Biscoff and Coffee.

Basq.co

Photograph: @basq.co/ Instagram

Specialising in just BBC alone, Basq.co has to be quite good at it. Along with the Original ($40), the bakery also offers other flavours like Thai Milk Tea ($40), Matcha ($40) Speculoos ($50), Caramel and Nutella drizzle ($50) and Chempedak ($50). All of the cakes come in six-inch size.

Basq.co’s Instagram feed is also a masterpiece in BBC photography. The drool-inducing cakes are featured prominently in almost every post. The only thing more handsome than their cakes are the boxes they come in.

The minimalist boxes are not your run-of-the-mill cake boxes from SKP; theirs come with a black band across the lower third with BASQ.co in bold lettering. If there’s anything we love more than cakes is clean, beautiful branding and Basq.co excels in this too.
