Rumi The Poets Cup opens rooftop bar with The Straits Teppanyaki right below

A new downtown spot for halal Teppanyaki-style cuisine is slated to open next week in Bussorah Street, an area in the Kampong Glam district that is already burgeoning with new restaurant openings.

The Straits Teppanyaki is set to officially open on October 22, but it is already accepting reservations for the 19th to 21st.

Hot off the grill

The new restaurant focuses on Asian and Western cuisines cooked and grilled on a hot metal plate, using the Japanese Teppanyaki method and style of cooking.

The black-and-gold restaurant will also feature Teppanyaki table-style seats where diners can watch as the chefs prepare their meals.

Sometimes referred to as a Japanese Steakhouse, a teppanyaki-style restaurant combines cooking and service into a culinary performance so we are thrilled to see that on display here.

Interestingly, the dishes on the menu are decidedly fusion cuisine, or at least that is what we observed from their Instagram photos.

The menu covers everything from starters like Jowo Lamb Skewers or Thai Mango Salad to snacks like the Nagasaki Chicken Kawa (crispy chicken skin) to more substantial mains like crayfish and salmon fillet, cooked Teppanyaki-style of course.

The main dishes are served with a choice of steamed rice, fried rice or pasta, soup of the day and grilled vegetables.

News about the restaurant came out a couple of months ago following an announcement by events-based beverage brand Rumi The Poets Cup saying that they are opening a permanent spot and co-sharing it with The Straits Teppanyaki.

New rooftop hangout

Halal rooftop “bars” are becoming a thing as of late, so you might want to add Rumi The Poets Cup to the list.

The beverage brand known for their artisanal drinks that come with special poetry notes has finally found a permanent home on the rooftop above The Straits Teppanyaki.

Rumi’s drinks are categorized largely into three main categories: The Dairy Collezione, The Mocktails and The Frizantea.

As its name suggests, The Dairy Collezione (from S$7.50) is a collection of all dairy-based drinks which include popular ones like Iced Rumicchino, Iced Caramel Cream, Iced Hazel Malt, Iced Matcha Latte and Iced Rumi Teh Tarik.

The mocktails selection is pretty extensive with predominantly fruity flavours like Watermelon Wedge, Passionfruit and Strawberry Lemon.

Perhaps the most interesting drinks category yet is the Frizantea which is a collection of drinks made of brewed tea, sparkling water and flavours.

The flavours are named after some prolific literary giants: Edgar Allan Poe (strawberry), Oscar Wilde (peach) and T.S Elliot (California green apples) amongst others.

The drinks are served at S$8 per glass or S$30 per bottle, suitable for 3 to 4 persons.

If you are looking for a place for drinks and flex your literary knowledge at the same time, well, Rumi The Poets Cup is it.

Otherwise, the place’s trendy atmosphere and chill vibes make the space ideal for Instagram-worthy photos or simply a nice spot to unwind.

And yes, you can also order snacks off The Straits Teppanyaki menu too.
