9 brands that totally nailed their National Day themed food this year

Majulah Singapura!

9th of August is almost here — happy long weekend, everyone! To celebrate, many local businesses have spruced up their menu with patriotic spirit.

With the coronavirus pandemic still causing safe distancing to be mandatory, perhaps the next best thing is to pick up some food to celebrate at home.

From red and white colour palettes to infusing local flavours to international recipes, here are the brands we think did an especially great job at celebrating the nation’s birthday.

1. Butter Studio

Homegrown bakery Butter Studio approached their National Day with the traditional red-and-white colour combo. This year, they created an entire SG55 collection featuring pretty treats inspired by local heritage flavours and decked out in national colours. The limited edition bundle has everything a party needs; from a cupcakes party box ($45), a cakelet ($20.90) and even a DIY National Day cupcake kit ($27). We especially love this kit because the idea is totally different from anything we’ve seen from other brands.

2. All Things Delicious

All Things Delicious panders to durian-loving citizens with their Mao Shan Wang Cake (from $68). Nothing is more Singaporean than eating durian, and what better format to feature this popular fruit in all its hearty and creamy glory? The clean design and little flags are what make this cake so aesthetically pleasing.

3. Pezzo

Durian pizzas are back at Pezzo Pizza

If you are planning a durian party this National Day weekend, why not order in Pezzo‘s durian pizzas? The pizza chain has re-introduced its popular Mao Shan Wang and D24 pizzas for a limited time only—a perfect excuse to have pizza and durian this long weekend!

4. Prima Deli

We just can’t get over how beautiful the photographs are in Prima Deli‘s National Day promotions. Red and white hues…checked, product placement…checked, and there are hints of that fun, party atmosphere National Day is famous for. This Strawberry Swiss roll ($5.50 till 14 August) may not be the most outrageous thing on this list, but we bet it is a crowd pleaser nonetheless.

5. Old Chang Kee

Old Chang Kee isn’t one to shy away from nationalism (remember that camou puff they did for SAF Day?). To commemorate Singapore’s birthday, the local curry puff brand has launched a series of NDP-themed puffs with four local flavours. They are:

  1. Chilli Crab’O inspired from Singapore chilli crab dish using real crab meat
  2. Rendang Chicken’O which comes with chicken and potato in rendang spices encased in green pastry
  3. Butter Chicken’O featuring chicken, onion and potato in creamy butter sauce
  4. Chicken Stew’O made with chicken in a creamy white sauce encased in charcoal pastry.

6. Ichikokudo

Another celebratory food inspired by the chilli crab comes from Ichikokudo. The ramen chain has introduced their take on a chilli crab ramen made with their signature chicken broth. The dish features a hearty bowl of ramen with crab meat, sweet and spicy broth with scrambled eggs, diced tomatoes to add tanginess, coriander and shredded leek.

7. Cat & the Fiddle

Cat & the Fiddle is currently offering a National Day cake and topper bundle, where every purchase of selected cheesecakes will come with toppers in our flag’s symbolic shapes: crescent moon and stars. The cakes participating in this promotion are:

  • Madam’Roselle (Roselle Tea, Yoghurt)
  • Queen of Hearts (Sweet Strawberry)
  • Red Riding Hood (Red Velvet)
  • The Emperor’s Romance (Lychee)

If you’d really rather take it easy this holiday weekend, you can order these cakes on their website.

8. Shake Shake In A Tub

If you’re throwing a party this 9th of August, Shake Shake In A Tub can help you feed your guests with delicious finger food that won’t cost you fireworks. From 1 to 15 August, you can order a National Day combo in stores. The combo goes for $15.50 and includes 8 pieces of Shake Shake chicken, shoestring fries and criss cut fries—enough food to feed up to four people. You may also choose two flavours: mala or cheese, truffle or sour cream & onion.

Hosting a bigger party? There’s a bigger National Day SG55 Bundle going for $55 on their website.

8. Momolato

Name us a more iconic popsicle than one that is in the shape of the Merlion. Local ice cream brand Momolato has launched two commemorative ice cream packs that pay homage to Singapore in colour scheme and flavours. The Singapore Strong Packs cost $50 each and make for a perfect National Day gift. The packs include three pints of gelato and three merlion popsicles. Depending on which pack you choose, you will get to taste a variety of local flavours such as muah chee, coconut gula melaka and black sesame.

Alternatively, if you just want the merlion popsicles, the Singapore River Merlion has all the nostalgic NDP vibes we miss the most. The cold treat plays homage to the merlion’s original location as well as the two colours of the Singapore flag. Taste wise, it is made of raspberry white chocolate and cheesecake.
