Hawker stall in Commonwealth selling smoked lamb ribs, grilled Wagyu and Angus steaks from S$15

Affordable.

Singapore has no shortage of halal steaks for every budget, but there’s always room for more.

Enter SALAI by MeatDrop at Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Centre, which sells gourmet steak dishes at relatively affordable prices.

The stall is an extension of MeatDrop, a Muslim-owned provider of premium halal meat.

Affordable steaks

Having access to premium meat naturally means SALAI by MeatDrop offers more than your average Western hawker stall.

For instance, every piece of meat served at SALAI is individually marinated, packed and sous vide before it is either smoked or grilled.

Those complex preparation and cooking methods are what you’d normally expect from a restaurant, and not so much a hawker stall.

Despite that, we think their offerings are still affordably priced.

First off, there are the mains, such as the Grilled Chicken (half bird S$10, full bird S$17)Grilled Angus Minute Steak (S$15), Grilled Wagyu Steak (S$17), and Smoked Lamb Ribs (from S$12).

Each main comes with salad, one side and one sauce.

Choices of sides:

  • Smoked Charcoal Rice
  • Grilled Pita Bread
  • French Fries
  • Aromatic Salad

SALAI’s in-house sauces are also quite novel:

  • White Salai (a smoky mayo)
  • Hickory BBQ
  • Garlic Chili
  • Assam Salsa

Burgers

We all know meat and toasted buns are a dynamic duo, so if you’re a fan of burgers, the hawker steakhouse has them in the menu as well.

There’s the Wagyu Pulled Beef Burger (S$11) and Wagyu Burger (S$14) which features a thick and well-marinated wagyu patty.

The burgers come with a side of fries.

Affordable meat platters

Quite expectedly, SALAI by MeatDrop also serves meat platters in the menu, but they don’t cost a pretty penny.

For just S$50, you can get a platter suitable for 3-4 pax comprising of a grilled full bird, smoked lamb ribs, and grilled Angus steak, served with all 4 sides and 4 sauces.

For comparison, meat platters in restaurants start from S$120 and could go up to S$270.
