Ah Lim Nasi Lemak, a Chinese Muslim-owned stall that used to sell nasi lemak at Maxwell Food Centre, has reopened on August 2.

This was after it was reported that the hawker had to close down her stall following disagreements with the hawker whom she shared the stall with last year.

Today, it seems like stall owner has found her footing once again and proceeded to reopen her stall at Ayer Rajah Food Centre.

The stall’s reopening was highlighted in a post on their Instagram page on July 27.

Peranakan Hokkien heritage

8 Days reported that the woman at the helm of Ah Lim Nasi Lemak is one Aishah Lim, a Chinese-Muslim with a Peranakan heritage.

Taking a page from her cultural background and early experiences of assisting her Peranakan Hokkien mother in the kitchen during her upbringing, she transformed these elements into Ah Lim Nasi Lemak.

This venture was launched on January 7, 2022 at Maxwell Food Centre.

Operating the stall independently, she offers nasi lemak and prawn noodles, alongside cafe-style cakes such as ondeh-ondeh and mao shan wang durian, all adhering to Muslim dietary preferences.

However, a mere three months down the line, Lim made the abrupt decision to shut down her business owing to conflicts with the co-hawker with whom she was co-sharing the stall.

She explained that the disputes originated from rental matters and eventually escalated to a juncture where sustaining a collaborative working rapport became unfeasible.

Nasi Lemak only

As of August 2, 2023, Ah Lim Nasi Lemak is now operating at Ayer Rajah Food Centre.

From the menu board in front of the stall, it seems like the hawker is now focusing on nasi lemak only. Prawn noodles and cakes are no longer on the menu.

The nasi lemak sets start from S$5 for chicken wing to S$6.50 for sambal sotong or sambal prawns.

If you’re keen to visit, note that the operating hours are short and even so, the stall might close early once sold out for the day.
